Five Questions with Amie Mbye ’18

1. In this newly created role, what are your primary goals for helping students navigate their educational and career paths?

Educating students on their major/core requirements and teaching them to navigate on-campus resources like the Student Success Center, the Chirico Career Center, and the Personal Counseling Center are my primary goals in helping students build resiliency and achieve success in their academic journey at PC.

2. How does your experience as an alum of Providence College influence your approach to advising current students?

I use the question, “What did I wish I knew as a first semester PC student?” as a framework to advise current students. With that framework in mind, I listen to the needs of the students and help them come up with solutions while keeping in mind what it was like for me. I use my experiences at PC to build rapport with students and give perspective into some of the challenges they may be facing.

3. How do you work with faculty advisors and staff to provide students with well-rounded support during their academic experience?

Being intentional about building strong relationships and having open lines of communication with the faculty advisors and staff is crucial to ensuring that students are receiving comprehensive support in their academic journey. As we are continuing to build on what academic advising looks like in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, we welcome feedback from faculty advisors and staff members on how we can improve and streamline the student academic experience.

4. The new SNHS building features a Student Resource Center. Are you excited about moving* into that space?

I am very excited about the Student Resource Center and moving into the new building. The space will make me more visible and accessible to SNHS students which provides me with more opportunities to build rapport with the students. The space will also make it easier for students to drop in to get whatever assistance they need.

*Please note that the Student Resource Center is now open and located in Mondor 206.

5. When you’re not busy advising students, what are some of your favorite hobbies or activities?

I enjoy spending time with family and friends discovering new restaurants and exploring new places. I love traveling and make it a goal of mine to visit a new state or country every year. Studying abroad when I was a student at PC really opened my eyes to the beauty and privilege of traveling. I also enjoy watching TV and a couple of my favorite shows include This is Us and Insecure.
