Building a Community of Compassion: The “Caring with Dignity” Pinning Ceremony

During Homecoming Weekend, the Department of Nursing hosted the second annual “Caring with Dignity” pinning ceremony, continuing a tradition that began in 2023. This ceremony marks a key moment for nursing students as they commit to the ethical and professional responsibilities they have toward those in their care and to one another.

Held in St. Dominic Chapel, the ceremony was led by College President Rev. Kenneth Sicard, O.P. ’78, ’82G, who reminded students that their work is grounded in the principles of truth, human dignity, and compassion—values aligned with the mission of Providence College. The event brought together members of the Dominican community, campus leaders, faculty and staff from the School of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the families of the nursing students.

Each nursing student received a “Caring with Dignity” pin, which was blessed by Fr. Sicard. In a meaningful gesture, students pinned each other, pledging their commitment to respect and charity in their future work. This ceremony also reflected the strong sense of community within the nursing program, as students support both their patients and each other.

A thank you goes to the Office of Mission and Ministry, especially College Chaplain Rev. Simon Teller, O.P., and the College Event Management and Planning team for their contributions to the ceremony’s success. The event was a reminder of the responsibility nursing students carry to provide compassionate care, grounded in the values of Providence College.
