Student Researchers Study Cancer Survivorship
This summer, Satoya Isophe ’24, Abbey Pawlowicz ’24, and Sam Pierre-Louis ’24 are completing a Providence College project in the Department of Health Sciences on cancer survivorship experiences among Black and Latinx survivors in Rhode Island.
The project began during the summer of 2022 with recruiting participants, conducting semi-structured interviews, and engaging with the community by attending various cancer support events. Additional data was collected over the 2022-23 academic year via focus group interviews with caregivers and community health leaders.
Isophe, Pawlowicz, and Pierre-Louis have spent this summer analyzing and evaluating interview transcripts to identify key themes including gaps in knowledge regarding cancer survivorship care plans, language barriers between patients and providers, and instances of cancer misdiagnosis. The findings and conclusions will be presented at the end of July at the University of Rhode Island undergraduate research symposium.
