Mondor Mural: Health & Histories Timeline

A Providence College Legacy and a Promising Future

A Health and Histories Timeline

This dynamic visual narrative traces the interwoven stories of healing, education, and place at Providence College. Through three distinct timelines — layered across the top, middle, and bottom of the wall — the Mondor Mural reflects the transformation of this historic site, from its origins as Chapin Hospital to the establishment of the Ben Mondor Center for Nursing and Health Sciences. Incorporating archival photographs, maps, headlines, and personal reflections, the stories encourage viewers to consider how the past informs the present and shapes the future.

The mural highlights the college’s expanding contributions to nursing and public health as well as the evolution of its physical and academic environment. It acknowledges Rev. Charles Vincent Fennell, O.P. ’28, the college’s first director of residence and the namesake of Fennell Hall, which stood on the site for 40 years.

The Mondor Mural honors the resilience of those who have delivered and received care during health crises across generations — from polio outbreaks to the COVID-19 pandemic. It also celebrates the inclusive values and enduring spirit that define the Providence College experience. Designed to spark curiosity, invite reflection, and foster intergenerational dialogue, the mural reminds us that shaping a healthier future requires shared responsibility, collaboration, and a deep respect for the stories that brought us here.
